The Obama administration is to bar Google from operating its controversial 'Link' search engine in Russia as a condition of the tech giant's acquisition of a company that maintains the service. Washington is concerned that the move will hand Kremlin-backed bots and trolls greater access to the controversial search engine, which it says is biased against the West.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled in June that Google must reject users in the country, ending a clash between Washington and Moscow over the company’s search engine and its “SearchPlus” advertising platform. Google previously allowed both services in the country, but has since moved to block them in Russia as part of the $US8.5billion ($12.4billion) deal. But this week, a source revealed to Bloomberg that the administration is to force the internet giant to implement more stringent technical restrictions on the Russian language version of Google Search.
